Caged is a starting point in representation for analysing media. it shows regional identity and can educate people, especially focusing on each difference a person may have or appear having. 

  • stereotypes are a useful shorthand for producers ( they are not always bad )
  • archetype is a typical representation whereas stereotypes are more exaggerated 

Halls theory 

Hall's 'end-decoding' model argues that media produces 'preferred meanings' but different people consume and interpret that text multiple ways. The dominant-hegemonic position: a 'preferred reading' that accepts the texts messages and the ideological assumptions behind the message
